May 20th, 2017 - New Youth Choir for Wakefield Sings Inaugural Mass
New Youth Choir for Wakefield Sings Inaugural Mass

The Bishop Konstant Youth Choir led the liturgy at their first Mass last Sunday at St Austin’s Church, Wakefield. The choir, superbly led by Charlotte Kitson, sang with both skill and enthusiasm. They sang a wide variety of music, from the contemporary setting of ‘Be Thou my Vision’ by Bob Chilcott, to the joyful ‘Christus Vincit’ dating back to the 9th Century. The children were supported by members of the adult choir of St Austin’s Church. Members of the congregation were delighted with the music, with one visitor to the church from Canada emailing to say, ‘A wonderful sound of young people which brought tears to my eyes’.

The Choir started in March 2017 and includes boys and girls from Catholic Schools throughout the Wakefield area. It is the latest project for the successful Diocese of Leeds Schools’ Singing Programme, which sees over 3000 children across West Yorkshire participating in choral singing every week.

In January of this year Charlotte Kitson was appointed Choral Director for Wakefield and Pontefract, and has since been delivering weekly whole class vocal tuition in the primary schools of the Bishop Konstant Catholic Academy Trust. The members of the Youth Choir are mostly drawn from these sessions, although all children are very welcome to join.

Charlotte Kitson said of the choir, “As a Wakefield native, it is so exciting for me to be bringing these opportunities for choral singing to a high standard to young people in the area. I have great ambitions for the choir, following the accomplishments of the other choirs of the Diocese of Leeds Schools’ Singing Programme, such as competitions, tours and broadcasts.“

Monsignor Canon David Smith (St Austin’s Parish Priest) also commented:

It was a great joy to hear the young voices leading our liturgy in the Mass. Their sparkle and enthusiasm was the perfect complement to the service and presents great hope for the future of choral singing at St Austin’s. I look forward to hearing them against services here and at English Martyrs”
