January 22nd, 2017 - Recording in London for Decca and the Friends of Cathedral Music
Recording in London for Decca and the Friends of Cathedral Music

Leeds Cathedral Chorister Federico writes:

Last year in April I was invited to sing at a concert in St. Paul’s Cathedral in order to raise money for the Friends of Cathedral Music. A few months after the concert, we were told that Decca would like to record a CD with as many of the original choristers as possible.

My dad and I got on a train to London on the 2nd of January and then the underground to St. Paul’s station. We rehearsed the pieces we were going to record in St. Vedast, a small church just a few metres away from St. Paul’s Cathedral. We rehearsed in the nave and had breaks in a small courtyard. I got an interview along with my friend Matthew, as neither of us was from a choir school, unlike most of the other choristers.

We had an hour long break in which we could have something to eat without our parents before the recording. A camera crew filmed us practising and walking through London with our cassocks on. They told us that this and the interviews would be used for marketing purposes and to promote the CD.

When we were rehearsing, we were visited by Aled Jones, MBE, a very famous chorister, who sang in Bangor Cathedral.

We recorded the CD in St. Paul’s Cathedral. We had to do lots of takes, because the Cathedral is in the centre of London, so there is a lot of traffic, which would often ruin takes. After many takes and patches we finally finished our part of the CD. We were told the CD would be called “Jubilate” and would be released before Easter 2017. It will also be on Spotify, i-tunes, and amazon music. We sang on three tracks: “Zadock the Priest”,“Iwas Glad”, and “AGaelic Blessing”.
