Leeds Trinity launches three new choirs with Diocese of Leeds Music

Leeds Trinity University has launched three new choirs in partnership with the Diocese of Leeds Music Department.

Nearly 50 children from 13 schools across Leeds will sing as part of the Leeds Trinity Cathedral Boys’ and Girls’ Choirs, and 15 adults – including staff and students from Leeds Trinity – will take part in the Leeds Trinity University Choir.

Howard Nelson, Chief Operating Officer at Leeds Trinity, said:

“We are very proud of our Catholic heritage at Leeds Trinity and in our 50th Anniversary year, we were very keen to create a new long-term legacy project that would not only be of interest to the University, but also the local community. We’re confident that our new choirs will engage young children and adults across Yorkshire, reinforcing the faith foundation and values which still characterise Leeds Trinity University today.”

As well as singing Sunday Mass once per term and getting involved with University events such as the annual Christmas Carol Concert and Cathedrals’ Group Choirs Festival, the Leeds Trinity choirs will also be part of a live BBC Radio 4 broadcast of Sunday Worship from the University chapel this month. Members of the community are invited to attend the Mass on Sunday 20 November, 7.00 – 9.00am at Leeds Trinity.

The Leeds Trinity Cathedral Boys’ and Girls’ Choirs performed for the first time at Leeds Trinity this week, as part of celebrations for their 50th Anniversary year on All Saints Day.

Lucy Haigh, Cathedral Choral Director at Diocese of Leeds, said:

"We believe that Leeds Trinity is the first university in Europe to sponsor a children's choir, and we are delighted with the launch of this highly significant partnership to build on the work of the Diocese of Leeds Schools Singing Programme; giving the children excellent opportunities and, ultimately, better outcomes.”

Staff and students at Leeds Trinity, as well as members of the local community, are encouraged to join the adult community choir, Leeds Trinity University Choir, which rehearses at the University campus in Horsforth every Wednesday, 1-2pm.

David Pipe, Choral Director for Leeds Trinity University Choir, said:

“The University Choir gives us a chance to share the University’s wonderful facilities and warm welcome with the local community. We will be working towards termly performances of an exciting, wide-ranging repertoire, and look forward to welcoming singers of all ages and abilities to come and join us."
