March 3rd, 2016 - Leeds Trinity University Choir in Winchester
Leeds Trinity University Choir in Winchester

Leeds Trinity University Choir, directed by Diocesan Choral Director Charles Rhodes, have just returned from a memorable trip to Winchester Cathedral where they participated in the Cathedrals' Groups Choirs Festival.

A thoroughly enjoyable weekend of music making saw choirs from 13 different institutions come together to form one massed choir of 350 singers. This combined with the Southern Sinfonia Orchestra and the cathedral’s famous Willis organ, made for a stunning spectacle.

The choirs joined together to sing Rutter’s Gloria and Magnificat, conducted by Hannah Curtain, and gave the world premiere of Will Todd’s Bring Light, commissioned by the festival and conducted by the composer. Leeds Trinity University Choir enjoyed a solo slot in the concert, taking to the stage to sing a moving rendition of the Song of Mary by Margaret Rizza.

Leeds Trinity University Choir is made up of a combination of students, staff and local residents and has been under the leadership of Charles Rhodes since April 2015. He said of the festival, “It has been a wonderful opportunity for us to perform as part of this festival and in such a prestigious venue. We thoroughly enjoyed our weekend and are eagerly anticipating Leeds hosting the festival next year.”
