February 8th, 2016 - Bradford Youth Choir joins forces with the Gabrieli Consort
Bradford Youth Choir joins forces with the Gabrieli Consort

The young singers of Bradford Catholic Youth Choir – already medal winners at the 2014 World Choir Games – are joining forces with the internationally renowned Gabrieli Consort after being one of just five choirs nationwide selected to join the training programme, Gabrieli Roar.

Musical Director Thomas Leech is thrilled that the singers have this additional boost: ‘They already get some great opportunities, but to sing alongside a world-famous choir and another four superb youth choirs will really help us inspire them and continue to broaden our singers’ horizons and aspirations. ’

BCYC's senior choir, made up of some 55 children and supported by St. Bede’s and St. Joseph’s Catholic College (Bradford) and Holy Family Catholic High School (Keighley), have enjoyed workshops with Gabrieli Choral Director Greg Beardsall and Gabrieli Consort member Kim Porter. The consort’s award-winning director, Paul McCreesh, recently visited the choir and said: "I'm delighted that BCYC have joined Gabrieli Roar this year, as I greatly admire the scale of the educational work the Diocese of Leeds Singing Programme provides in Bradford and across Yorkshire. I hope that being part of Gabrieli Roar will inspire a lasting love of choral music in these talented young singers, and that the opportunity to perform alongside Gabrieli's professional musicians will prove a fantastic vocal training experience."

The first concert of the scheme sees the choirs join together at Southwark Cathedral on Tuesday February 16th, with a further performance and recording as part of Cambridge Summer Music Festival at Ely Cathedral in July.

BCYC have forthcoming performances when they give their spring concert on Saturday March 5th at St. Anthony’s Church, Clayton, two BBC Radio 4 broadcasts on Tuesday 7th and Wednesday 8th March, and perform Mahler’s Symphony of a Thousand with the Orchestra of Opera North, Leeds Festival Chorus and Leeds Philharmonic Choir on Saturday 4th June in Leeds Town Hall.
