How much music can you fit into one month?

The busy month of March began with a Saturday concert by the Cathedral Junior Boys and Girls Choirs with music by Bach, Purcell and Britten. This first week of the month also marked the start of Lent. Allegri's famous Miserere marked this this liturgical transition and was sung by the Cathedral Boys and Adults on Ash Wednesday.

These choirs were joined by the Cathedral Girls choir in a concert held at Sheffield's Hallam Cathedral two days later. That weekend also saw a musicathon by the Bradford Catholic Youth Choir - 12 hours of music, cakes and fun!

The second week of March began with a Monday lunchtime concert by the Cathedral Choir School in Leeds Town Hall involving the whole school in telling the story of the primary schools journey to a specialist music school. Narration was provided by the children themselves and accompaniment from the Leeds College of Music Swing Band.

The following day our choirs from Leeds, Huddersfield and Bradford met to record the audio for BBC1 Easter Day Songs of Praise. This was followed by five separate filming sessions in churches and schools across Leeds to marry sound and picture together.

The Bradford Catholic Girls Choir made two live broadcasts on BBC Radio 4 Daily Service. A ‘come and sing' Faure Requiem was held at St Urban's Church in Leeds led by Choral Director Charlotte Kitson.

Choirs from the Schools Singing Programme won numerous prizes and placings in both the Rothwell and Skipton Music Festivals over the weekend of March 21/22. In Skipton, the choir of St. Cuthbert's and the First Martyrs' Primary School won the Junior Choir Class, with St. Clare's coming 2nd and St. John the Evangelist 3rd. In Rothwell, St. Philip's won the morning session of the Junior Choir Class with St. Urban's 2nd and St. Francis of Assisi 3rd, while St. Patrick's were placed 3rd in the afternoon session. On Saturday, Bradford Catholic Boys' Choir won the Joyce Blake Trophy, and Bradford Catholic Girls' Choir won the Dunsmore Trophy and the Herbert Burnley Trophy, winning all of their respective classes.

The month ends with the recording of three CD's for Brilliant Classics at Leeds Cathedral of music by Arvo Part, Andriessen and Elgar.
