February 2nd, 2014 - BBC Sunday Worship from Leeds Cathedral
BBC Sunday Worship from Leeds Cathedral

The BBC's Radio 4 Sunday Worship programme was broadcast live from the Cathedral at 8.10am on the 2nd February. It was a Mass for the Feast of Presentation of Christ in the Temple celebrated by Rev Mgr Philip Moger (Dean) and homily from the Rev Matthew Habron (Assistant Priest). The early broadcast made for an early start for the choir, with the warm up rehearsals taking place at 7.00am on the day.

The cathedral boy and girl choristers and adult choirs sang Arvo Parts striking Berliner Mass, not often sung by English cathedral choirs. Arvo Part is a contemporary Estonian composer writing in a minimalist style. He uses the structure of the harmonics of bell sounds to form his musical colours, a style he calls 'Tintinabulation'. The absence of melody and perpetual repeation of the same notes made for a very challenging learning experience for the choirs!

The hymns were sung by members of the Leeds schools in the Diocesean Schools Singing Programme and included Hail to the Lord's Annointed, Immortal Invisible God Only Wise and Sweet Sacrament Divine.

The programme can be heard for the next week on i-player.
Director of Music: Benjamin Saunders; Organist: Daniel Justin; School Choirs Conductor: Lucy Haigh; Producer: Stephen Shipley
