RSCM Awards at St Patrick's, Huddersfield

Choristers from the Huddersfield Boys and Girls Choirs joined with Wakefield Cathedral Choirs in a special service of Vespers at St Patrick's Church. The Huddersfield Boys and Girls Choirs (part of the Diocese of Leeds Schools Singing Programme) made up a large majority of the children gaining awards with fourteen in total receiving the prestigious medals. Collecting their Bronze award were seven boys and two girls the highest scorer being Oliver Heath from the Boys Choir with 87(Distinction). Collecting the silver award were two boys and three girls the highest scoring being Alana Sharples from the Girls' Choir with 83(Merit). The music was conducted by Thomas Moore (Director of Music at Wakefield Cathedral) and Lucy Appleyard (Director of Music at St Patrick's Church, Huddersfield). Simon Earl (Organist and Assistant Director of Music at Wakefield Cathedral) accompanied the service with Malcolm Hinchcliffe (Organist at St Patrick's) providing voluntaries before and after the service. The awards were presented by Fr. Ian Smith and John Wardle (Chief examiner for the RSCM). This was a truly inspiring event and really gave the choristers a sense of achievement. The singers produced a fantastic sound and thoroughly enjoyed sharing the experience with choristers from other choirs. A particular musical highlight was Haydn's Insane et vanae curae which filled St Patrick's Church with sound and left us all feeling wonderfully uplifted!
