Summer Term Round Up

The academic year drew to a close with a very busy time for the music department. In June the Cathedral Choirs sang for the installation of the new Chancellor of Leeds Trinity University, Gabby Logan. A week later they broadcast Choral Vespers on BBC Radio 3 with music by Frisina, Byrd, Gounod and Perosi. Daniel Justin played the organ and concluded the service with Karg-Elert's Third Symphonic Canzona. This broadcast received generous and widespread acclaim:

• "I thought this was stunning - both in terms of repertoire and execution......Truly magnificent." (Radio 3 listener)
• "It was all first-rate. I don't know how, in the past, I have missed hearing your choir at Leeds, but it is certainly splendid and I commend you on your quality work there." (Dan Locklair, composer)
• "I have occasionally heard singers come to grief in the complex final bars - not at Leeds, of course, where everything was sung and played to perfection." (Karg-Elert Society)
• "The glorious music, so professionally presented, was a huge joy. I listen regularly to Evensong on Radio 3, but this is the first time I have felt moved to write my appreciation! My congratulations to all involved in any way, for a very special hour of worship and prayer." (Radio 3 listener)
• "A lovely service with some real gems." (BBC producer)

The Huddersfield Boys and Girls Choirs presented a stunning summer Gala Concert in a packed St Patrick's Church, directed by Lucy Brand. Bradford Catholic Youth Choir gave a similar end of term concert at St. Joseph's Church, directed by Thomas Leech and Charlotte Kitson, featuring the new junior choirs and accompanied by Elizabeth Cockshott. A month earlier the Bradford choirs took part in a spectacular open-air performance of Carmina Burana, opening the inaugural Bradford Festival with the Skipton Camerata Orchestra and Bradford Festival Choral Society.

At the Cathedral there were two Diocesan festivals which combined the respective forces of all the Diocesan Boys and Girls Choirs. A third concert directed by Lucy Haigh featured the work of the schools in the Leeds Singing Programme and the Cathedral Junior Choirs. In addition there were numerous end of year concerts by our school groups to audiences of their fellow pupils, parents and supporters.

Two new CDs will be released at the end of the summer. The first by Benjamin Saunders features the complete organ works of Georgi Mushel. The second presents the complete organ and choral works of Maurice Duruflé with the Cathedral Choirs and Skipton Camerata, directed by Thomas Leech. The organ works are performed by Adriano Falcioni of Perugia Cathedral. Both releases have international distribution on the Brilliant Classics label.
