Leeds College of Music forms Leeds Cathedral Choir School Partnership

Leeds College of Music (LCoM) has recently formed a partnership with the Diocese of Leeds and Holy Rosary & St Anne's Catholic Primary School, Leeds, as part of its commitment to widening participation in music-making and higher level education.

Holy Rosary & St Anne's Catholic Primary School, home to the Leeds Cathedral Choir School initiative, is a voluntary aided primary school based in the Chapeltown area of the city. The school is aiming to become the first state primary choir school in the country and, in the future, may change its name to Leeds Cathedral Choir School. It is planned that there will be a new purpose-built music block, and that every child will learn to play an instrument.

The school and LCoM believe that there are significant mutual benefits to be achieved from working together. In support of the initiative, Leeds College of Music will make an annual grant to the Leeds Diocesan Trust towards the costs of providing a Choral Director in the Choir School. Leeds College of Music will also loan a good quality new piano for the school to use at its site and, as part of the Conservatoire's undergraduate community placement programme, LCoM students will work with the Choral Director, offering pupils of the school mentoring in singing.

The delivery of the piano to the school has been organised for mid-November; LCoM became an All-Steinway School in September 2011 and is proud to be celebrating its first anniversary with this commitment to music education in the wider Leeds community.

Of the partnership, LCoM's Principal and Managing Director Professor Philip Meaden states: "I was delighted to accept an invitation to become a Patron of the Leeds Cathedral Choir School and at the opening meeting spotted an opportunity for a mutually advantageous partnership. This partnership will allow the Conservatoire to fulfil part of its commitment to widening participation in a way that is consistent with its mission for excellence in music education."

Ben Saunders, Director of Music, Diocese of Leeds commented: "A primary focus of the choir school project is to raise the academic attainment, self-confidence and ultimately the life chances of the children in inner city Leeds through music education. Working with LCoM in training their music educators of the future with practical classroom experience provides an innovative and mutually enriching opportunity for the choir school pupils and college students."
