Leeds Schools Concert

Sunday afternoon saw Leeds Cathedral filled with school children that are part of the Leeds Schools Singing Programme. These schools are the newest addition to the Diocesan Singing Programme and it was only their second concert in the Cathedral. The building was absolutely packed with parents and teachers supporting their schools.

Each choir performed individually in a selection of diverse pieces originating from America, England, the Congo, Liberia and Japan. The concert opened with a rousing arrangement of the spiritual 'Joshua fir de battle of Jericho" and concluded with the West Yorkshire favourite, 'On Ilkley Moor Baht At'. These were sung with gusto by all one hundred and twenty children. The concert was also supported by the new Cathedral Junior Boys and Girls Choirs, the singers themselves being largely drawn from young children in these local schools.

The concert was directed in its entirety by Lucy Haigh, Choral Director for Leeds Schools, and accompanied by the Director of the Singing Programme, Thomas Leech. Father Michael Mclaughlin introduced the concert and thanked the parents and children on behalf of the Diocese for their support throughout the year.
