BBC Sunday Worship from Chapeltown

A Mass celebrating the new Leeds Cathedral Choir School, the country's first state primary choir school was broadcast on BBC Radio 4 on Sunday 17 June. This programme was part of the BBC's regular series of Sunday Worship programmes. The mass was sung by the children of Holy Rosary School, (the new Choir School) and came from Holy Rosary Church in Chapeltown, just a street away from the school. The children were supported by girls and adults from Leeds Cathedral Choir and accompanied by a quintet from Leeds College of Music. The choir and musicians were directed by Choral Director, Sally Egan, and the organ was played by Daniel Justin.

The music included a mass setting for childrens choir, strings and flute by the French composer Jehan Alain with a specially composed Psalm setting by Daniel Justin. At the end of the service, the quintet played Pavane by Gabriel Fauré.

The Celebrant was Monsignor Philip Moger, Dean of Leeds Cathedral with Preacher, Monsignor Michael McQuinn. The service was produced for the BBC by Mark O'Brien.

The programme can be heard again here for the next six days.
