New Organ for St Edward's in Clifford

New Organ for St Edward's in Clifford

Anton Skrabl was chosen to relocate and restore a new organ for St Edward's Church in Clifford. St Edward's is a grade one listed structure and is often described as one of the most beautiful churches in the Diocese of Leeds. In replacing the old organ, it was important to find an instrument whose aesthetic would complement the Norman inspired architecture and fit into the very high gallery at the back of the church.

Following a search by the Director of Music for the Diocese of Leeds, Benjamin Saunders together with the church's organ consultant, Dr John Rowntree, a suitable organ was located in a redundant Catholic church in Dumfries and Galloway. The instrument was built by the famous Victorian organ company Foster and Andrews and comprises of two manual divisions, unusual in that the Great organ was the enclosed division. The restoration has been a conservative one, with only one flute stop added on the second manual to aid the organs versatility for liturgical accompaniment.

St Edward's has several young organ students that attend St John Fisher Catholic School in Harrogate and are tutored by the Diocesan Schools Singing programme director, Thomas Leech. Last year, one of the young students, Francis Goodburn, obtained an organ scholarship to St John's College at Oxford University, and now presides over their magnificent new Aubertin organ.
