Bradford Girls take first place in Wales

Guy Fawkes Day certainly went with a bang for the Bradford Girls' Choir as they took first place in the youth choir section of the North Wales Choral Festival. Now in its fifth year, the competition attracted over 25 choirs from across the British Isles.

Competing against choirs from Ireland, Wales and England the girls sang an eclectic programme of music from Africa, the UK and Latin America to a packed audience in the Venue Cymru in Llandudno. In their feedback before announcing the results, the adjudicators commented on the wide variety of tonal colours created by the choir and their adventurous programming and use of the available space.

The Bradford Girls' Choir rehearses twice weekly at St Joseph's Catholic College, and its forty five members are drawn from Catholic schools in Bradford and Keighley who are members of the renowned Diocese of Leeds Schools Singing Programme. The choir regularly sings for concert, liturgies and festivals both in the UK and in Europe. In December the choir will be featured on BBC Radio 2's Sunday Half Hour ‘Christmas Special' broadcast which comes from Leeds Cathedral.

The choir was accompanied on the piano in the festival by Elizabeth Cockshott, Organ Scholar at Leeds Cathedral and herself a former member of the choir. The choir was conducted at the festival by founding director Christopher McElroy, and also by Hayley Nolan, the first Head Chorister of the girls' choir who made her conducting debut!

After the results were announced choir director Christopher McElroy was presented with a glass trophy and a winner's cheque for £500 much to the delight of the choir members and supporters who had travelled to North Wales especially for the occasion!
