March 23rd, 2011 - Cathedral Girls' broadcast live on BBC Radio 4
Cathedral Girls' broadcast live on BBC Radio 4

Leeds Cathedral Girls' Choir broadcast the Daily Service live on BBC Radio 4 LW on St Patrick's Day. The BBC's longest running programme, the Daily Service is transmitted live each day from Emmanuel Church in Didsbury. The service is usually led by a professional choir, but occasionally choirs are invited to lead the music, so it was a great privilege for 20 youngsters from the Cathedral to be able to use their musical talents to a listenership of around 200,000 people.

The rehearsal began at 8.00am in Didsbury, meaning a 6.00am departure by coach from the Cathedral. Breakfasts were eaten on the way, and the girls slept on the way back to Leeds.

The Girls sang two hymns, "Lord of Creation" and "Christ be beside me". The anthem was a setting of a text suitable for the feast day of a Saint "Gaudent in caelis" by Richard Dering.

The choir was directed by Christopher McElroy and accompanied by Benjamin Saunders.
