September 21st, 2010 - Singing for the Pope in Twickenham
Singing for the Pope in Twickenham

BBC News followed the Pope's visit to London, both from the venue in Twickenham and also with a live link up to Holy Rosary and St Anne's School in Leeds. The school choir had the honour of providing the music, and chose to sing Jubilate Deo and a medieval setting of the Ave Maria from the Llibre Vermell. They were joined by Maria Fidelis Convent School (BBC Songs of Praise Choir of the Year) to lead the congregational singing.

Following the performance, Diocese of Leeds Choral Director Sally Egan remarked:
"I was so proud of the choir, as I hope they are of themselves.  The Big Assembly was the biggest performance we have done in every way and I couldn't be sure how the children would react to the pressure on the day.  I needn't have worried as they were all, without exception, calm and focussed; they knew they had a job to do and they did it to the best of their ability.  They have the support of the whole school behind them, and when they came on screen I understand that the cheers of the children watching back in Chapeltown could be heard for miles around."

Nearly 4,000 young people from schools, colleges and universities across the UK met with the Pope during 'The Big Assembly' on 17th September. The event was to celebrate Catholic education in the UK and the proceedings at St Mary's University College in Twickenham, London, followed the format of a school assembly, with hymns, prayers, a religious blessing and an address from Pope Benedict XVI. Run in conjunction with the Catholic Education Service for England and Wales, the programme included a live satellite link-up to a school in The Gambia and the morning's proceedings were watched online by schools around the UK.

Prior to the performance, Holy Rosary and St Anne's had visits from BBC news, Newsround, ITN and Sky to report on the children's prepartions for the event. The BBC clip below is reproduced below by kind permission.
