Boys' Choir Festival

Boys' Choir Festival

Sunday 13th June saw a joint event presented by the diocese's four boys' choirs.  The Cathedral Boys' Choir and the Bradford, Huddersfield and Harrogate Boys' Choirs came together for a packed day of rehearsal and performance of liturgical and secular music. They first sang mass at the Cathedral in the morning, which included a lively new Latin mass setting for trebles by Choral Director Keith Roberts.

In the afternoon they gave a concert which included songs from the Llibre Vermell de Montserrat (Catalan for "Red Book of Montserrat"), a collection of late medieval songs. Each choir had also prepared solo items. The Bradford Boys sang "Panis Angelicus" by Franck and Mendelssohn's "Hear My Prayer", finishing with a popular piece from their recent German tour - "Goodnight Sweetheart." The Huddersfield Boys presented some stirring Spiritual arrangements alongside Britten's poignant "New Year's Carol."The Cathedral Boys sang the ever popular "Pie Jesu" by Lloyd Weber and motets by Victoria and Rheinberger.

In introducing the concert, the Dean, Monsignor Moger remarked that "in a time when some people consider that boys' choirs are in decline in Britain, the reverse is demonstrably the case in West Yorkshire. The work in the Diocese with boys' choirs - of course complemented by the excellent girls' choir programme - is proof that both genders can excel in singing in the church, given the right leadership and structure." A total of over 60 boys took part in this second festival event, much enjoyed by the participants and the audience.
