Bradford Girls’ Choir ranked highest UK choir in International Eisteddfod

The Bradford Girls' Choir, a choir of the Diocese of Leeds have just returned from a successful mini tour to Birmingham and Wales.

In Birmingham they took part in the National Festival of Music for Youth, performing on the stage of Birmingham Town Hall.  Singing alongside 20 of the country's best youth choirs, the Bradford Girls' Choir were awarded the Music for Youth Senior choirs' award for their ‘outstanding musicianship.'

The following day in Wales, the girls competed in the Llangollen International Eisteddfod, home of the famous ‘Choir of the World Competition.'  Here they competed against choirs from all over the world, including Canada, South Africa, Czech Republic and Slovakia.  In the event, the choir was place 5th  (out of 16) , a remarkable result, only 5 marks behind the winning choir from the Czech Republic, and the highest placed UK choir.  The girls performed wonderfully, and were a great credit to the City of the Bradford, the Diocese of Leeds and to the UK as a whole.

The choir was directed by Christopher McElroy (Assistant Director of Music for the Diocese of Leeds) and accompanied on the piano by Dr Christopher Johns (Choral Director for the Diocese of Leeds.)  The choir comprises 45 girls from Catholic schools in Bradford and Keighley and is a part of the Diocese of Leeds Schools singing programme.

The video clip of their singing in Llangollen is available can be viewed here
