Fifth Anniversary Gala Concert of the Bradford Youth Choir

Fifth Anniversary Gala Concert of the Bradford Youth Choir

Wednesday 20th May saw a packed St George's Hall in Bradford celebrate five years of the Bradford Youth Choir singing programme.  Formed in 2004 through a unique partnership between the Catholic secondary schools of Bradford and Keighley and the Diocese of Leeds, the programme has grown into the largest faith based singing programme in the country, with over 1000 children participating in singing sessions each week.

Over 250 children took to the stage of St George's hall to sing a wide ranging programme of music, sacred and secular, ancient and modern.  Also featured was soprano Phillippa Cairns, a founder member of the Bradford Youth Choir, and now a student at Birmingham Conservatoire.

Particular highlights of the evening included the Bradford Boys' Choir who sang selections from their upcoming tour to Germany (Franck and Haydn) and the Bradford Girls' Choir, who will this summer represent the city of Bradford in the National Festival of Music for Youth, and the UK in the Llangollen International Eisteddfod.

In addressing the audience and performers the Lord Mayor of Bradford, Councillor John D Godward said: "I am very pleased to be asked join in this celebration of the Bradford Youth Choirs. This special event marks five years of continuing success for the biggest schools' singing programme in the country. The various regional, national and international successes of the choirs and the schools in the programme shows what can be done with effort and dedication. It proves that when we give our children the time and support they deserve, they can surpass all our expectations. The schools and parents of these fantastically high-achieving Bradford and Keighley schoolchildren should be proud of their success and proud of themselves for their help and support."

The souvenir programme for the evening can be read here.
