May 3rd, 2009 - Boys' Choir Festival
Boys' Choir Festival

Sunday 3rd May saw a joint concert between three of the diocese's four boys choirs at Leeds Cathedral.  The Cathedral boys' choir and the Bradford and Huddersfield boys' choirs came together for an exciting performance of Vaughan Williams' Let All the World, and motets by Elgar, Andriessen and Mervyn Cousins.  The Bradford Boys' Choir performed some music from their forthcoming tour to Germany, and the Huddersfield choir, formed for only six months, gave a performance of Malcolm Archer's "My Song is Love Unknown".  The Cathedral choir gave pieces from their repertoire by Sibelius and an arrangement of a traditional Marian hymn.

In introducing the concert, Monsignor McQuinn remarked that "in a time when some people consider that boys' choirs are in decline in Britain, the reverse is demonstrably the case in West Yorkshire. The work in the Diocese with boys' choirs - of course complemented by the excellent girls' choir programme - is proof that both genders can excel in singing, given the right leadership and structure."

A total of over 70 boys took part in this first festival event, much enjoyed by the participants and the audience.
