December 19th, 2008 - Christmas with the Orchestra of Opera North
Christmas with the Orchestra of Opera North

Dewsbury Town Hall was the venue for the Cathedral Choirs' performance of Vivaldi's Gloria and Bach's Christmas Oratorio on the 18th December. This was in fact the third performance the choirs had given of these works during December, the others being at the Advent Carol Service and the Leeds Town Hall Lunchtime Concert series. On this occasion the singing was enhanced by the accompaniment of the Orchestra of Opera North, a professional orchestra, also based in Leeds.

The hall was filled by a capacity audience, including many hearing the choir for the first time. The Cathedral Boys', Girls' and Adult choirs were joined by the Bradford Boys' Choir (a choir of the Diocese of Leeds) for the evening performance.

The evening began with Corelli's Christmas Concerto, played with joyous flare by the orchestra. The Gloria followed, sung in Latin, and the Christmas Oratorio with the original German text. The concert concluded with two fine carols by Andrew Carter that had been specially orchestrated for the evening, followed by an opportunity for the audience to join in the singing of "O come all ye faithful" and "O little town of Bethlehem."
