This semi-professional ensemble is made up of a proportion of choral scholars and auditioned volunteers. Admission is open to all through application, which may be made on an individual basis at any time of the year.
Generally considered to be the finest mixed voice chamber choir in Yorkshire, the repertoire centres on polyphony and chant. A recent recording has been made with Herald AV featuring repertoire by the sixteenth century Portuguese composer Pedro de Cristo and a new four-part Magnificat, specially written for the choir in 2007. The Cathedral Choir is the only choir in the city to regularly broadcast on BBC Radios 2, 3 and 4.
Special orchestral performances have included Mozart's Requiem, Bach's St John Passion and Bach's Christmas Oratorio with the Orchestra of Opera North.
