Twelve catholic primary schools in the city of Leeds receive singing classes from a Cathedral Choral Director every week. Three primary schools in Harrogate are also part of the programme.
Usually, whole classes are taught during the school day according to year groups. In some schools though chamber choirs have been formed and after school rehearsals complement the work done during the school day. The aim is to enthuse all of the children - even the reluctant singers - while improving their vocal and musical skills. Fun warm-ups, musical games and a wide variety of repertoire including hymns, folk songs and Taize chants are useful in this process. Children are also prepared for events such as assemblies, masses, concerts and carol services.
In Leeds, the schools singing programme is led by Lucy Haigh, and in Harrogate by Tom Leech.
