The Diocese of Leeds provides specialist choral training for pupils at Kirkees schools during term time. A total of nine schools in the area are visited weekly, and boys and girls from these schools are invited to join specialist auditioned boys' and girls' choirs. The programme benefits from rehearsal slots for the choirs during the normal school day.
Led by Choral Director Keith Roberts, the choirs focus on good singing techniques, using a wide variety of repertoire, both liturgical and secular. The choirs have sung at the Mrs. Sunderland festival, school carol services and performed songs to the whole school in assemblies. Young people from four Kirklees schools also sang for the Pope in the Mass in Birmingham at which John Henry Newman was beatified.
